A: I didn’t really enjoy it, it looks very appealing and glamorous, but the girls are far from that. When I competed in Miss Downtown Honolulu, someone doused one of the girls evening dresses with pepper hot and come to find out she was allergic and ended up in the hospital!
A: No, luckily I never had anything stolen, shredded or doused, but crazy stuff goes on behind the scenes. Everyone has fake smiles and the girls are ruthless!
A: Iao Valley State Park it's definatly my zen spot.
Q:What are some of your healthy eating habits?
Q:What's would say is the best thing on TV?
A: I love Adventure Time on Cartoon Network! My favorite character is Princess Bubble Gum, because she's so nerdy and cute!
A: I eat a lot of fish, mostly salmon, also rice and spinach, its important to get those vegitables and I drink a ton of water. But you can't starve yourself, I eat 6 small meals a day.
Q: Where do you go to relax?

Kailani Hess, her name means heavenly ocean, but you can just call her Kai. Born in Cambodia and raised in Maui, Hawaii’s second largest island, Kai’s life wasn’t always the paradise she is surrounded by.
“I didn’t really get along with my adopted parents, so I’ve been on my own for a long time, which made me mature really fast,” Kai Says
“It was hard, but I feel like if I can do it, anyone can. I never turned to drugs or anything illegal you know, and I could have easily fell into that. But I just chose to work hard instead, I have my own place, my own car, I take care of myself.”
And work hard she does! Not only is Kai a Go Go Dancer and Ring Girl for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). She also works weekends as a security officer and warrants Clerk for the Maui Police Department, and does childcare aid for student mothers at the University of Maui where she is also a full time Administrative Justice student.
“Go Go is like fast cash, it allows me to pay my phone bill and car insurance. I do model when I get the chance, but most of the time I request not to get paid. I don’t really care about modeling,” Kai laughs.“I just like representing the company helping them get exposure, I turn down so many jobs because I’m really just focused on my fitness right now, I don’t want to be in the entertainment industry forever, I’m just a student.”
Fitness is a big deal for Kai, who is one of the thickest Go Go’s where she dances, and loves her body, but admits it took awhile for her to have that confidence. And recalls a time in high school when she was 115 pounds and people called her fat. Since then, Kai says she handles negativity by not trying to impress anyone but herself.
“Recently I was on break in the bathroom and I overheard a girl like, ‘Did you see the one girl up there with all the tattoos, she’s fat’ and I came out the stall like; You think you can do my job better than me? You can gladly go up there and dress how we have to and do what I do I will step down! Otherwise you can stand on the ground getting drunk with your friends not getting paid looking up at me.” Kai recalls.
“It’s like I didn’t audition for this job, I was scouted, people just judge you before and have no idea what their talking about.”

In High School Kai was a very active student, serving as Captain of her Basketball and Volleyball teams two years in a row. She was also Homecoming Queen her junior year and chosen as May Day Queen, a traditional Maui festival, in her senior year.But the title she seems to be most proud of is being class sweetheart during her freshman year, which she attributes to her friendly personality.
“I was always the girl who talked to everyone you know? I read a story once that touched me about how a smile can change someone’s whole day. So I always talk to people, because you never know who really needs that.”
Kai keeps very busy, and has many fast paced jobs, and says the only time she goes out is when she’s dancing or when celebrating good grades in school, which last semester came after 4 A’s and B. On her days off she like to spend time with her dogs Aulii and Ezekial who are like her babies.
When she finishes up her degree at the University of Maui, Kai hopes to work with juveniles as a correctional officer, as well as share her story with foster kids so that they can be motivated to go down the right path.
“Everyone is born a leader, but you know some people just choose to follow, once you realize that no one is the same as you, we all have our own personality, then you can be your own leader.”
